Strategic Reset. Strong Foundations. Confident Future.
Since taking up the role last year, AMPS Director General Alan Beech has led a focused and purposeful period of strategic reset for the association.
From the outset, his appointment was designed to strengthen governance, clarify long-term priorities, and position AMPS with a defined and credible strategy for the future.
During his tenure, Alan has:
- Strengthened relationships with key trade bodies and Government departments under the #TrustedVoice campaign
- Established new Special Interest Groups to better harness member expertise
- Defined and articulated AMPS’ Mission & Strategy 2026–2030
- Brought renewed structure, focus and cohesion to the association’s activities
Drawing on his extensive career in the sector, Alan has helped ensure that AMPS is not only relevant to today’s industry challenges but well positioned to shape tomorrow’s opportunities.
As a result, the association now has a clear long-term vision, agreed strategic objectives, and stronger engagement across its membership.
A Planned and Structured Transition
As originally intended, Alan will step down in the autumn, having successfully completed the strategic development phase of his tenure.
The recruitment of his successor marks the next stage in AMPS’ evolution: the delivery and execution of the 2026–2030 strategy.
This transition has been carefully timed to allow for a structured handover period, ensuring continuity, stability and sustained momentum.
The next Director General will build upon the foundations laid by Alan and his predecessor, David Oates, leading AMPS through a phase of growth, influence and measurable impact.
Industry Breadth and Leadership Credibility
A defining factor in the success of previous Director Generals has been deep sector knowledge and credibility.
AMPS represents far more than generating set manufacturers. We are the collective voice of:
- Manufacturers
- Distributors
- Component suppliers
- Hire companies
- Service providers
- And the wider power generation supply chain
Our members provide liquid- and gas-powered equipment while also leading the transition to net zero through technologies including:
- Exhaust aftertreatment systems
- Green liquid fuels e.g., HVO, B100 etc
- Green gaseous fuels e.g., Biomethane, Hydrogen etc
- Complimentary technologies, e.g., Heat pumps, Solar, Energy Storage Systems etc
- Smart control systems and Micro-grid solutions etc
- Etc.
The Director General must understand and represent this breadth, balancing traditional power solutions with emerging technologies, and commercial realities with policy ambition.
About AMPS
AMPS is a not-for-profit trade association, founded by its members, funded by its members, and governed by its members.
Everything we do is shaped by the needs and priorities of the industry we represent. Our credibility rests on independence, technical understanding and practical experience.
The association is supported by a small, dedicated executive team, volunteer committees and an elected Council of member representatives. This governance structure ensures accountability while enabling strategic direction to be set collectively.
The Role of Director General
The Director General sits at the centre of this structure, aligning Council, committees and the executive team into one cohesive, effective organisation.
The role combines strategic leadership, industry representation and operational oversight. Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering the AMPS 2026–2030 strategy
- Setting the tone and quality of communication with members
- Driving membership recruitment and retention
- Supporting marketing and brand positioning
- Shaping event programmes and sourcing high-quality speakers
- Understanding and articulating technical and policy issues raised by members
- Representing those issues effectively to Government and other trade bodies
As a not-for-profit organisation operating on behalf of its members, financial stewardship is a critical component of the role. The Director General has oversight of setting and maintaining the annual budget, working closely with Council and the executive team to ensure:
- Financial sustainability
- Responsible management of member subscriptions
- Strategic allocation of resources
- Transparency and accountability
While no individual will be an expert in every area, a strong Director General will bring credibility, judgement and leadership, supported by an engaged Council and capable team.
The Opportunity
This is an opportunity to lead a respected trade association at a pivotal moment for the power generation sector.
The industry is evolving rapidly, technologically, commercially and politically. AMPS is positioned to be the authoritative and trusted voice of that evolution.
We are seeking a leader who can build influence, strengthen engagement and deliver tangible value for members.
Could this be you?
Or is there someone within the industry who should be considered?
We would welcome a confidential conversation.
You could be the next person to steer the #TrustedVoice of the PowerGen industry.
If you are interested in this role, please get in touch at amps@amps.org.uk or call the office on +44 (0) 208 253 4505. The deadline for applications is Friday 6th March 2026.
