AMPS is currently exploring the development of a UK-recognised training programme for Generator engineers and apprentices, aligned to international best practice and with accreditation via City & Guilds bringing CSCS recognition to a sector that, until now, has had no formal qualification to call its own.
Demand for power generation is growing rapidly, thanks to the explosion of advanced data centres and increasingly complex critical power environments. Yet the industry faces an ageing workforce, growing difficulty attracting young talent, and no standardised route to demonstrate the skills of its engineers. The AMPS Accredited Power Generation Technician qualification is designed to change that.
Developed by the AMPS Training Committee in partnership with EGSA and Europgen, the proposed programme would cover 11 core modules, from electrical fundamentals through to commissioning and troubleshooting, completed over 12 months, with a final assessment leading to full City & Guilds assured Power Generation Technician status.
The qualification is designed to be flexible, meaning that it can be taken as a standalone course or bolted on to an existing apprenticeship or engineering qualification. It is open to experienced engineers seeking formal recognition, career-changers entering the sector, apprentices completing their current programmes, and both UK and EU nationals.
Crucially, AMPS members themselves will play a central role in delivering the course. Members with training facilities are being invited to host relevant modules, while qualified individuals within the membership can train to deliver course content. This keeps the programme within our industry’s own hands, with the credibility of City & Guilds behind it.
To ensure members have genuine input into the design, delivery model, and commercial structure of the programme, AMPS is asking all members to complete a short survey by 15th May 2026. The responses will directly inform decisions on pricing, format, and rollout, making this an opportunity to shape something that will benefit the whole industry for years to come.
