Is it possible to access generating set ul standards and keep abreast of changes form the internet?

UL (Underwriters’ Laboratories) is a global independent safety science company, based in the USA.

The UL web site does not allow access to specific standards however information can be obtained from the following link.

The UL Standards body operates with other global Standards bodies, and therefore has a number of harmonised standards with organisations such as:

  • CSA
  • IEC
  • ISA
  • ULC
  • ANSI

The list is being continually developed as UL expands its business with global manufacturers with interests in the North American market.

The principal UL standard for “Stationary Engine Generators….” Is UL2200

The major components which are incorporated within a generating set are each covered by specific UL Standards.

For example: The ac generator.

Here the manufacturer of an ac generator is obliged to comply with specific sections referred to in standards such as:

  • UL508 – Industrial Controls…,
  • UL1004 – Safety of Rotating Electrical Machines…,
  • UL1446 – Insulation Materials…..,

Then there are standards which cover a wide sector of electrical machines and have a specific section which apply to generators,

  • e.g.;- UL1741- Inverters, Converters, Controllers, and Interconnection Safety Equipment for use with Distributed Energy resources.

AMPS can provide a Technical Guide which summarises the technical requirements of UL2200.
